Bob Dylan is known as a great songwriter. However, he is also famous for providing his own spin on other people’s songs. He often sings other people’s materials in his concerts. Not only that, his love for other people’s compositions has even led him to record some cover albums that has become part of his ever growing discography. Below are some of Bob Dylan’s cover albums.
World Gone Wrong
The album contained blues and folk songs as performed by Bob Dylan. With only an acoustic guitar to back his voice, the songs were full of resentment, murder, loss, acceptance, and love. Dylan described this period in his life as the New Dark Ages and the album featured songs such as Love Henry and Two Soldiers.
Good As I Been to You
Good as I Been to You is another acoustic album that features songs from anonymous and popular artists, such as Frankie and Albert by Mississippi John Hurt and Sitting on Top of the World by the Mississippi Sheiks.
Bob Dylan
The self-titled album consisted of 11 cover songs. Dylan covered Blind Lemon Jefferson, Bukka White, and others. The album also had two original songs. It was said that the album was recorded in just two days for only $400.
Shadows in the Night
Shadows in the Night featured B-side love ballads that were previously sung by Frank Sinatra. It included four songs from 1957’s Where Are You? Those were performed by Dylan’s five piece touring band, instead of the big band sound that Sinatra’s songs were famous for.
Fallen Angels
Fallen Angels was a sequel to 2015’s Shadows in the Night. It also featured American standards that were previously recorded by Frank Sinatra, except for Skylark, which was performed by Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer.
Christmas in the Heart
Bob Dylan recorded swinging versions of holiday classics that were laced with martial drum rolls and cheerful choral. The album contained covers of Must Be Santa and Fairytale of New York that was originally done by The Pogues.
Dylan
This album is the first one that featured all cover songs. However, Bob Dylan was not consulted by his record label Columbia when they decided to make the album. That night is the reason why it was not a commercial success, and even the critics hated the album. Some of the songs that were included in Dylan were Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell and Mr. Bojangles by Jerry Jeff Walker.
These are just some of Bob Dylan’s cover albums. Some of the albums were well-received by both fans and critics alike, while there are some that Dylan wishes to not exist in any form. If you want to learn about Dylan’s most played covers, you can check this article from Vulture.
